If they get Bad Flaherty, everyone may be heading back to Los Angeles for Game 6. The Dodgers came into the series just hoping their rotation could hold up. It has turned out to be their strength. They need it to remain so.

Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes, a starter who hadn’t pitched in more than a month because of an elbow injury, took over on the mound and got Shohei Ohtani to fly out. Alex Verdugo made a spectacular catch in foul territory, catching the ball as he tumbled over the shallow wall — and then quickly throwing the ball back to the infield to prevent the Dodgers’ runners from advancing.
Here in Oshu, where Ohtani grew up, baseball is like a religion. The town was long famous for its beef and ironware; now it’s known for Ohtani. He played Little League and then honed his skills in high school long before the world learned that one of the greatest players the game would know was half a world away.
The 2024 World Series features a heavyweight battle between the No. 1 Los Angeles Dodgers and No. 1 New York Yankees. It’s the first time that the two big-market powerhouses will square off for the championship since 1981.
Game 1 world series
Cortes made sense as lefty counter to the left-handed hitters in Freeman and Ohtani. As a starter, Cortes held lefty batters to a .530 OPS in the regular season. Ohtani was 2-for-12 against him in his career.
Nestor Cortes missed his spot with a first pitch fastball and Freeman made him pay. As recently as the NLCS, Freeman was not driving that pitch. His exit velocity was down and he was mostly limited to serving singles in front of outfielders and limping station to station. That home run swing wasn’t there in the NLDS and NLCS. Now it’s back. That’s huge for the Dodgers.
But in the eighth, the Dodgers capitalized on a costly defensive miscue. Ohtani rocketed a Tommy Kahnle changeup for a double off the top of the right-center field wall. Juan Soto’s one-hop throw back to the infield bounced off Gleyber Torres’ glove, and Ohtani was able to advance to third.
Tim Hill is New York’s go-to lefty reliever and he’s had an excellent postseason. Plus, he’s actually pitched these last few weeks. Cortes’ first appearance in five weeks was in that situation. Maybe it wouldn’t have mattered and Freeman would’ve walked it off anyway, but, in real-time, it felt like Cortes was the wrong reliever there. Boone made a mistake, Cortes made a bad pitch, and now the Dodgers have a 1-0 series lead.
History pulsates in the postseason, all the more when iconic clubs clash. And Valenzuela’s death earlier this week only added to the emotional heft of what is taking place here. Prior to the first pitch, the Dodgers had two of their World Series MVPs — Steve Yeager (1981) and Orel Hershiser (1988) — honor Valenzuela’s memory by placing a ball on the mound, below where his No. 34 had been painted.
